The Swedish legislature has backed a motion calling on the government to set up a so-called House of Sweden in Taiwan.
Stockholm already operates one House of Sweden — in the United States. There, it hosts the embassies of Sweden, Iceland and Liechtenstein, along with an event center featuring conference and exhibition halls.
Now, the Swedish Riksdag is calling on Stockholm to set up a House of Sweden in Taiwan to strengthen ties and increase Sweden’s representation in the country.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry has welcomed the news. It says support for Taiwan has a multi-party consensus in the Swedish legislature.
The ministry says Sweden and Taiwan are both facing military threats, cognitive warfare and disinformation efforts from authoritarian countries. That makes it more important than ever, according to the ministry, to strengthen ties between Sweden and Taiwan.
The ministry says it hopes the Swedish government will respond positively to the legislature’s latest motion.
