The government has yet to come to a consensus over a proposal, which would make it easier for Hong Kongers to settle in Taiwan.

During a report to the legislature on Wednesday, Interior Minister Hsu Kuo-yung said relevant government bodies were still discussing the proposal.

Taiwan’s government was set to implement rules on May 1 to simplify the process for Hong Kongers to obtain citizenship. Under the proposal, Hong Kongers would have to reside in Taiwan for five years and earn double the minimum wage to be eligible.

Public backlash forced the government to pause its plans. Many feared that the proposal would make it easier for Chinese agents to infiltrate Taiwan.

Thousands of Hong Kongers have settled in Taiwan following the 2019 pro-democracy protests. Existing law makes it difficult for them to settle in the country permanently.
