A member of a Japanese delegation currently visiting Taiwan has tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday. The delegation, representing the youth division of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party, arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday for a five-day visit.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou says the delegation has practiced social distancing and taken multiple PCR tests during their time in Taiwan. She says so far, none of the staff who had contact with the Japanese delegation have shown symptoms of a COVID-19 infection. This includes Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu, who hosted a banquet for the delegation on Tuesday.
Ou says that staff will take tests only if they exhibit symptoms, in line with guidelines from Taiwanese health authorities.
The Japanese delegation has canceled all meetings and activities planned for the remainder of their visit.
