A mountaineer from Changhua County has become the first Taiwanese person to climb the world’s third highest peak without using bottled oxygen. Lu Chung-han reached the summit of Kangchenjunga at 8,586 meters above sea level on Thursday.

The mountain stands in the Himalayas in the border region between India and Nepal.

Before the 1850s, geographers believed that Kangchenjunga was the highest mountain in the world. Later calculations then showed that it is the third highest, behind Mount Everest and K2.

Lu Chung-han ultimately plans to climb all 14 of the world’s mountains with summits above 8,000 meters. So far, he has climbed seven of them, all without supplemental oxygen. Kangchenjunga is the highest to date.
