Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has chosen Taiwan as the site for its first metaverse development center in Asia. The Metaverse XR Hub in Taipei celebrated its official launch on Friday.
The metaverse is a broad concept that often refers to digital worlds experienced in virtual reality, as well as augmented reality, a combination of the real world and the digital. Together, those can also be called extended reality, or XR for short.
At the launch of Meta’s Metaverse XR Hub on Friday, President Tsai Ing-wen said the center will drive forward digital development in Taiwan.
Tsai says in time, the metaverse will transform people’s lives, just like smartphones and the internet did in recent decades.
The president says the government is working to turn Taiwan into a global hub of digital development. She says she hopes to work with Meta to make that happen.
