President Tsai Ing-wen nominated People First Party (PFP) Secretary-General Li Hung-chun as Control Yuan vice president on Monday. The Control Yuan is Taiwan’s top watchdog body. Its authorities include the ability to impeach and censor officials, as well as the power to investigate government agencies.
Presidential Office Spokesperson Xavier Chang says the president considered Li’s career as a structural engineer and politician before coming to the decision.
Li was a legislator for 18 years. He became Secretary-General of the PFP in 2019.
Li says that he is thankful for the president’s nomination and hopes to use his position to serve the public. He added that he will resign from his party in line with the Control Yuan’s non-partisanship and independence.
Taiwan’s legislature still needs to confirm Tsai’s nomination.
