Nine human rights experts are in Taiwan to evaluate the country’s human rights practices. The evaluation comes as part of Taiwan’s own human rights report.
In 2009, Taiwan’s government adopted two United Nations treaties outlining appropriate human rights standards. Since adopting the two treaties, Taiwan has periodically published reports on how well it abides by the agreements. The first two reports were published in 2012 and 2016.
This year’s report is the third iteration. It was originally scheduled for publication in 2020, but was postponed due to the pandemic.
The panel of experts hail from Austria, Denmark, Canada, Germany, among other countries. They will deliberate until May 13.
Taiwan’s Cabinet says it hopes Taiwan’s willingness to abide by UN agreements, despite not being a UN member, shows Taiwan’s commitment to being part of the international community.
