Foreign Minister Joseph Wu says he expects strong international support for Taiwan’s inclusion in this year’s World Health Assembly (WHA). The WHA is the World Health Organization’s decision making body. This year’s WHA is scheduled to take place virtually between May 22 and May 28. Taiwan has participated in past WHAs as an observer, but has been barred since 2016 due to pressure from China.
During a report to the legislature on Monday morning, Wu says that his ministry is putting more effort than ever into Taiwan’s campaign to join the WHA. He says that many other countries are offering support for Taiwan at all levels of government. But, Wu says now is not the time to reveal what that support entails.
Wu says it's not just governments that are voicing support for Taiwan at the WHA. He says that many private organizations and NGOs also want to see Taiwan at the WHA. Wu says calls for Taiwan to join the WHA are stronger than ever.
