Taiwan reported 50,720 new local cases and 48 imported cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday. Health authorities also reported 12 COVID-related deaths.
Tuesday marks the first time that Taiwan’s daily case count has surpassed 50,000.
About a third of the people with new cases of COVID are from New Taipei, with 16,906 people there testing positive. Another 10,283 people have the disease in Taipei, along with 7,006 more in Taoyuan.

Twelve more people died of COVID-19 on Tuesday. The eldest was a man in his 90s with a history of nervous system and cardiovascular diseases. He had received two doses of a COVID vaccine.
The youngest person was a woman in her 20s with a history of asthma and anemia. She had received one dose of a COVID vaccine.
Out of the 50,720 people confirmed with COVID on Thursday, 34 have moderate symptoms and 14 have severe symptoms.
