Taiwan has been invited to attend the second annual Global COVID-19 Summit. That’s the word from the foreign ministry on Wednesday. The COVID-19 Summit is organized by the United States. This year’s event will take place on May 12.
Former Vice President Chen Chien-jen will represent Taiwan at this year’s summit, as he did at last year’s event. According to the foreign ministry, Chen will give a pre-recorded speech at the summit. His remarks will include a pledge of US$1.5 million from Taiwan to support global vaccine coverage.
US President Joe Biden will attend the event, which is a rare opportunity for Taiwan to appear alongside a US leader. Taiwan is usually barred from international events and meetings due to pressure from China.
This year’s Global COVID-19 Summit will see countries discussing how to end the pandemic globally and how to prepare for future COVID-19 variants.
