Senior US diplomat Michele Sison has reiterated the United States’ support for Taiwan to take part in international organizations, including the World Health Organization.

Sison is the US Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs. She was speaking on Tuesday while meeting with Taiwan’s representative to Geneva, Nicole Su.

Sison also says she has met with the World Health Organization director-general and asked him to let Taiwan take part as an observer at the upcoming World Health Assembly.

In a tweet posted on Wednesday, Sison said collaboration with Taiwan “benefits the health and wellbeing of all” and included a photo of herself and Su.

In response, Su thanked the US for its long term support of Taiwan. She says that Taiwan will continue to work with the US and other like-minded countries to address global health issues together.

Taiwan was able to attend the World Health Assembly with observer status from 2009 to 2016. However due to pressure from China, Taiwan has not been able to attend the assembly since 2017.
