Taiwan reported 68,732 new local and 37 imported cases of COVID-19 and 19 deaths on Sunday. This is the third day in a row with local cases over 60,000.
The deceased were all over 70 years old with chronic illnesses. Among them, eight were not vaccinated.
99.79% of this year's cases in Taiwan have been mild or asymptomatic.
Taiwan has seen five children aged 10 and under have serious cases of COVID this year.
People 65 years old or older who have tested positive in a rapid test can have doctors prescribe medicine for them before they get a PCR test.
Children two years old or younger who test negative in a rapid test can be evaluated by a doctor and don’t need to get a PCR to become a confirmed case.
Taiwan’s vaccination rate is 85.94% who have had a first dose, 80.81% who have had a second dose and 62.96% who have had a booster shot.
Officials are working on a looser quarantine policy for those who have had booster shots. The details will be announced soon.
