Taiwan reported 85,720 new local cases of COVID-19 on Friday. Forty-nine more people have died from the disease.
Almost a third of the people with new cases of COVID are from New Taipei, with 23,704 people there testing positive. Another 11,684 people in Taoyuan have the virus, along with 11,414 in Taipei.
Another 49 have died from COVID-19. All but one of them had a history of chronic illness, and less than a third were fully vaccinated with three doses of a COVID vaccine.
Most of the people who died were over the age of 70, but the youngest was in her 30s. She had a history of nervous system disease and had not been vaccinated against COVID-19.
Out of the 85,720 people confirmed with COVID on Friday, 237 have moderate or severe symptoms. Most of them are over the age of 70.
Taiwan also recorded 41 imported cases of COVID-19 on Friday.
