Taiwan’s Transitional Justice Commission has cleared the criminal records of political prisoners unlawfully convicted during the martial law period.
The commission was founded in 2018 to investigate historical injustices committed during Taiwan’s authoritarian rule and to clear the records of political prisoners.
This round of clearings includes important pro-democracy activists like Shih Ming-teh and former President Chen Shui-bian. It also includes cases related to the 1979 Formosa Magazine Incident, a watershed moment in Taiwan’s democratization movement.
The commission has struck out 5,983 cases since it was founded. It is set to dissolve later this month.
