The United States’ policy towards Taiwan has not changed. That was the word from top US officials on Tuesday.
Biden said on Monday the United States would use force to defend Taiwan if it was attacked by China. He was speaking in Tokyo in response to a reporter’s question. His response seemed to stray from the US’s policy of strategic ambiguity so Biden and top US officials later clarified that US policy has not changed.
On Tuesday, Biden reaffirmed at a press conference that US policy towards Taiwan has not changed. He says Washington’s policy of strategic ambiguity, in which the United States neither commits nor rules out intervening in an invasion, remains in place.
Speaking at the same press conference, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says the United States’ one China policy remains the same.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou said on Tuesday that US officials have clarified that their policy towards Taiwan has not changed. She added that the United States’ commitment to Taiwan is “rock solid.”
The Defense Ministry thanked the United States on Tuesday for its commitment towards providing Taiwan with the means to defend itself. The ministry says it will continue to cooperate with like-minded countries like the United States to maintain stability in the Taiwan Strait and Indo-Pacific.
