Foreign Minister Joseph Wu says that defending Taiwan is “our own responsibility” but that Taiwan needs international support. He says Taiwan needs others to speak out to support the country and provide it with the means to defend itself. Wu was speaking in an NPR interview on Tuesday.
On Monday in Tokyo, US President Joe Biden said the US would be willing to defend Taiwan. He later clarified that US policy towards Taiwan has not changed.
US Department of State Spokesperson Ned Price reaffirmed on Tuesday that US policy towards Taiwan hasn't changed. He says the United States will continue its One-China policy, support peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and ensure that the status quo is not unilaterally changed. US officials say they are committed to providing Taiwan with the means to defend itself.
Minister Wu also says that Taiwan wants to avoid war and keep the status quo, but is learning lessons from the war in Ukraine. He says that Taiwan is studying Ukraine’s example of how to use asymmetric warfare and popular mass mobilization.
