Gov’t advisor: Taiwan “unlikely” to return to normal life by September
A person gets tested for COVID-19.

A government health advisor has warned that life in Taiwan is unlikely to go back to normal by September. Dr. Lee Ping-ying made those comments in an interview on Thursday.

Many in Taiwan had expected that the current outbreak would mostly subside by September, allowing authorities to remove pandemic regulations. But Dr. Lee says that may no longer be true.

Lee says Taiwan’s infection curve is similar to Japan’s and South Korea’s, two countries that still have not returned to a low infection level months into their outbreaks. He says with Taiwan’s current trend of infections, it would be difficult for the country to relax all restrictions by September.

But Lee says that doesn’t mean that great improvements haven’t been made. He says Taiwan has done well in greatly lowering its COVID death rate through widespread vaccinations. Lee added that the government may still gradually relax restrictions as the situation improves.
