Premier Su Tseng-chang has thanked the Transitional Justice Commission for four years of hard work as the agency prepares to close down this month.
The commission is an independent government organ responsible for investigating and rectifying actions taken by the authoritarian KMT government prior to 1992. It is set to dissolve on May 30.
Su says that the commission’s responsibilities will be handed over to a transitional justice office including representatives from six government bodies. Those are the ministries of justice, interior, culture, health and education, as well as the National Development Council. Su says these will pick up the baton and continue to push for transitional justice and strengthen Taiwan’s democracy.
Su listed some of the commission’s accomplishments over the past four years. These included examining over 7,000 cases of a political nature, overturning nearly 6,000 unlawful convictions and removing symbols of authoritarianism.
Su says the commission has completed its final report and will hand it over during an official ceremony on Friday.
