Taiwan’s national power provider announced a plan to construct new electric vehicle charging stations throughout the country on Friday.
Taiwan’s demand for electric vehicles is high, with over 10 thousand already on the streets. But some vehicle owners use at-home charging stations, which are wasteful and pose a safety hazard.
Taiwan Power Company president Wang Yao-Ting says the new charging stations will be built by cooperating with operators of residential and other parking places. He says the stations will have dedicated electric meters, where electricity will be discounted up to 80% when used outside of peak hours.
Economic Minister Wang Mei-hua says the new scheme will help incentivize spreading electricity usage out throughout the day, easing the utility’s strain. She added that as Taiwan uses more renewable energy, the new stations will be a “win-win” towards the goal of reaching zero emissions by 2050.
