Taiwan’s health minister says the country will relax its border controls in June. Minister Chen Shih-chung did not give any details of the policy changes or precisely when they will happen. But he did say the adjustments to Taiwan’s strict system of quarantine on arrival will be “gradual.”

Right now, everyone arriving in Taiwan has to do seven days of quarantine at home or in a designated quarantine hotel. Taiwan has also banned tourists from entering the country since March 2020.

Last month, the health minister said that Taiwan would consider allowing quarantine-free entry to travelers from countries with a similar COVID infection rate to Taiwan.

And on Friday, Chen said Taiwan had reached the point where the risk of infection within Taiwan’s borders was the same or higher than the risk coming from outside.

The minister says he will announce changes to the border controls some time between “this month and next month.”
