US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says that China’s increased provocation against Taiwan’s security is “deeply destabilizing.” That came on Thursday as Blinken outlined the United States’ policy on China at an event in Washington, DC.

In his speech, Blinken reiterated the United States’ commitment to its one China policy. The policy recognizes the authorities in Beijing as the only legal government of China, but it leaves the status of Taiwan undecided.

Blinken also says the US is opposed to unilateral changes to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.

The secretary of state’s speech came days after President Joe Biden said at a press conference that the United States would intervene if China were to attack Taiwan. Biden’s remark was seen by some as a deviation from the US policy of “strategic ambiguity.” That policy allows the US to remain vague about how it would respond in the event that China takes Taiwan by force.

Antony Blinken stressed in his speech that US policy towards Taiwan has not changed.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry said on Friday that China’s suppression of Taiwan’s security, economy and international participation has caused concern to the US and the international community. It says that in the face of China’s disruption to the rules-based international order, democratic allies and partners need to stand together.
