Taiwan rings in the Dragon Boat Festival this Friday with cheer and cautious optimism as the coronavirus pandemic continues to upset daily life. President Tsai Ing-wen says the pandemic is at a “very critical phase” and that people should take more precautions to safely enjoy the three day holiday.
The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the most popular annual holidays in Taiwan. In 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic forced people across Taiwan to cancel their celebrations altogether. Despite a record number of infections this year, most cities are still holding traditional events like boat races for people to enjoy. However, crowds of spectators are smaller than usual this year.
Vice President Lai Ching-te says Taiwanese people should focus on health. Traditionally, the festival is believed to help protect against diseases and illness. Powerful medicinal plants such as wormwood, calamus and other herbs were used in the past to fight off germs and boost immunity to infections. Today, the government is encouraging vaccination and highlighting other COVID-19 prevention measures.
