Taiwan has unveiled a plan to tackle food insecurity as part of an effort to achieve the UN’s goal of ending hunger by 2030. Agriculture Minister Chen Chi-chung outlined the proposals on Monday.
Government statistics show that 70% of low-income children in Taiwan have experienced hunger.
The new policies to tackle food insecurity include increasing food services in targeted areas and establishing facilities to sell excess produce at low prices. They will also encourage more public-private partnerships to tackle malnutrition.
Chen says the agriculture council will set up a hotline to show people where they can buy prepared lunches for as little as NT$60 (US$2.00).
