A delegation from Slovakia has met with Taiwanese lawmakers to discuss ways the countries can work together in the future. The meeting took place on Thursday morning, during the delegation’s six-day visit to Taiwan.
Lawmaker Hsu Chih-chieh says that he’s grateful for Slovakia’s support. He thanked the country for donating vaccines to Taiwan earlier in the pandemic and signing a new judicial deal on Tuesday.
The agreement will help Slovakia and Taiwan work together on civil and commercial matters. It’s the first time Taiwan has signed a judicial deal with an EU country.
Legislature official Lin Jih-jia says that Taiwan and Slovakia share a similar history. Both countries were ruled by totalitarian regimes, but eventually became democracies.
Lin says that although Slovakia is not one of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies, it still supports Taiwan’s bid to attend the World Health Assembly. He says he hopes that Taiwan will send its own delegation to Slovakia to cultivate even closer ties.
