President Tsai Ing-wen has welcomed Eswatini’s new ambassador to Taiwan. Promise Msibi takes up the position after serving as Eswatini’s ambassador to Ethiopia and the African Union.
Eswatini is the only country in Africa that enjoys full diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
Speaking at the Presidential Office on Monday, President Tsai reflected on her visit to Eswatini in 2018 to mark 50 years of formal relations. Tsai says the trip left her with a deep appreciation for the two countries’ friendship and showed her what they had achieved by working together.
The president says Taiwan and Eswatini have grown closer during the pandemic. According to Tsai, Eswatini is Taiwan’s third largest source for imports of hand sanitizer alcohol. Taiwan, for its part, has worked with manufacturers in Eswatini to produce medical masks.
Tsai ended her speech by thanking Eswatini for speaking in support of Taiwan at international organizations like the World Health Organization.
