President Tsai Ing-wen and Premier Su Tseng-chang attended the official celebrations of Taiwan’s Police Day at the National Police Agency on Wednesday. Taiwan celebrates its police force annually on June 15.
During the ceremony, President Tsai honored 28 exemplary police officers and presented medals to 10 senior personnel.
Tsai thanked the police force for its services and maintaining order. She specifically highlighted the police force’s help in implementing COVID-19 prevention measures over the last two years.
Tsai said that in the future, besides safeguarding against “traditional” dangers, such as narcotics, violence, and theft, the police will need to adapt and respond to more technologically advanced crimes. She said that blockchain-based currencies, for example, are used by some criminals to hide their cash flows.
Attending the same event, Premier Su Tseng-chang said that approval ratings for police in Taiwan have stayed over 80% for many years. He said that on Tuesday his cabinet approved a NT$1.5 billion (US$50 million) supplementary budget to bolster the force.
