Sullivan affirms U.S.’s one-China policy and warns Beijing over Taiwan Strait
U.S. and Chinese officials meet to discuss how to avoid conflict.

United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan says that the U.S. remains committed to the one China policy as tensions simmer in the Taiwan Strait. Speaking at a Center for New American Security (CNAS) 2022 National Security Conference on Thursday, he said the approach will effectively enable the US to deter Chinese aggression against Taiwan.

Amid declining US-China relations, he said there is concern about peace and stability in the region. His comments come after Beijing’s declaration on Monday that China "has sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction over the Taiwan Strait”.

In a separate event hosted by the Brookings Institution on Thursday, U.S. Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns said that US-China relations are at their lowest point since President Nixon’s historic 1972 visit. In a video speech from Beijing, he talked about the need for common ground and the importance of managing risks.
