The foreign ministry has expressed thanks to two US senators for introducing a bill to bolster support for Taiwan. That’s the word from Foreign Ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou on Friday.
The bill in question is the Taiwan Policy Act of 2022. Its sponsors are the chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Bob Menendez, and Senator Lindsey Graham. They say it would be the most comprehensive change to the United States’ Taiwan policy since the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, when Washington switched recognition from Taipei to Beijing.
Menendez and Graham hope to have the foreign relations committee vote to send the bill to the Senate next week.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou says that the Taiwan Policy Act is multifaceted. Ou says it includes an upgrade to Taiwan-US relations, enhancement of security and trade between the two sides, support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations and countermeasures to China’s threats towards Taiwan.
