A dispenser with free mosquito repellent has been installed for public use in a local park in Taipei. The dispenser is a pleasant surprise that obviates the need to carry bug spray and offers a welcome respite from the incessant whine of mosquitoes in Taiwan.
Taiwan's hot and humid climate offers a favorable breeding ground for mosquitoes, gnats, flies, and other pests. The situation worsens in the summer around stagnant pools with vegetation, where the blood sucking insects thrive. The park has numerous trees, flowers, small reservoirs of water, and trails that can attract more bugs and increase the risk of disease.
Throughout Taiwan, mosquito bites can especially spread dengue fever, which can potentially cause death. Although most of the population is not at risk, the installation of mosquito repellent is an important measure to help limit and prevent transmission.
