Taiwan’s government has no plans to replace the current defense minister. That’s according to Presidential Office spokesperson Xavier Chang.

Media reports began circulating on Monday that Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng was going to be replaced by National Security Council head Wellington Koo. But Chang says these reports are baseless, and have not been verified by the Presidential Office.

Chang says President Tsai Ing-wen approves of Minister Chiu’s performance. He says Chiu’s precise analysis of international and regional issues has contributed greatly to Taiwan’s national security.

Chang says recently the media has been senselessly sensationalizing tensions between the national security council and defense ministry. He says both institutions are part of the same team and are working towards strengthening Taiwan’s national security.
