A coalition of civil society groups is calling on the government to improve human rights and labor standards policies in Taiwan. The coalition includes the Taiwan Labor Front and the Taiwan Association for Human Rights, among others.
Taiwan Labor Front secretary general Son Yu-liam urged the government on Monday to strengthen existing regulations and prevent forced labor. He says that the government has an obligation to protect workers’ rights, and the laws Taiwan has right now don’t do enough to prevent violations.
Taiwan has faced an increasing number of incidents of human rights violations against foreign students, who are exploited by their universities. They are compelled to work long hours for low pay to afford tuition. Migrant workers in the fishing sector and other industries are also often subject to abuse.
