Leaders from the Group of Seven (G7) countries have stressed the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. That came from a communiqué published after the 48th G7 leaders’ summit, which concluded on Tuesday.
The G7 is an inter-governmental political forum which brings together leaders from the world’s democracies with the largest economies.
This year’s communiqué called for a peaceful resolution to tensions between Taiwan and China. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out taking the island by force.
This is the second year in a row that the G7 summit addressed issues surrounding the Taiwan Strait.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry says it welcomes the G7 leaders’ sentiments. It says Taiwan remains committed to being a transparent democracy, and that it will continue to deepen ties with G7 countries.
