President Tsai Ing-wen is calling on democracies around the world to come together to fight authoritarianism. In a pre-recorded speech on Thursday, Tsai said countries can stop expansionism by autocratic regimes “only when we work together and support one another.”
Tsai was addressing the 63rd congress of the Liberal International, a grouping of liberal political parties from around the globe. Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party is a member, alongside the ruling parties of Canada, Belgium, Israel and the Netherlands.
In her speech, Tsai said Taiwanese people are standing on the front line of the democratization process. And she says Taiwan has not shied away from what she calls “authoritarian intrusion” from China.
President Tsai says Taiwan is ready to work with the international community to rebuild the liberal world order.
