President Tsai Ing-wen has hailed Taiwan’s national academy for driving the country’s economy. The president says Taiwan would not be globally competitive without Academia Sinica’s stellar research personnel.
In a speech on Monday, Tsai praised the academy for its work studying COVID-19. She says that has helped keep Taiwan and the rest of the world safe.
The president also highlighted Academia Sinica’s role in taking the world’s first pictures of a black hole. The academy is part of a global project that captured the first glimpse of the black hole at the center of our galaxy earlier this year. The project also took the first picture of any black hole in 2019.
Tsai says that image hangs in her office as a reminder of Taiwan’s ingenuity.
The president says Academia Sinica will be instrumental in Taiwan’s green energy transition. She says she hopes business and academia will work with the government to overcome challenges and reach Taiwan’s net-zero goal.
