The government says Taiwan’s COVID-19 border controls will stay in place for the foreseeable future.
Health official Chuang Jen-hsiang says the number of infections worldwide rose over 20% the past week, and new Omicron subvariants are threatening a second wave in Taiwan. That’s why, he says, Taiwan has no plan to drop its 25,000-a-week limit on border entries nor cut quarantine down from three days.
Chuang also says people tend to travel and meet with friends more often in the summer, increasing the potential spread of COVID-19.
He says officials will keep reviewing Taiwan’s COVID measures on a rolling basis.
