Honduras’ new ambassador to Taiwan Harold Burgos met with Foreign Minister Joseph Wu on Tuesday. Burgos presented Joseph Wu with a copy of his diplomatic credentials, and the two discussed bilateral ties.
Burgos previously worked in Honduras’ Embassy in Taiwan as a culture officer. He has also studied at Taiwan's National Chengchi University on a scholarship.
Wu says Taiwan and Honduras share a long history. He says he looks forward to working with Burgos to deepen bilateral ties. Wu emphasized that Taiwan is happy to help Honduran President Xiomara Castro’s administration achieve its goals.
Xiomara Castro was sworn in as Honduras’ president in January. During her election campaign, she said she would switch diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing if she were elected. However, Castro’s transition team later said that Honduras would maintain ties with Taiwan after she was elected.
Meanwhile, Burgos said he will work to improve Taiwan-Honduras ties. He said he will identify areas where the two countries can cooperate. Burgos also forwarded well wishes from Castro and Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina.
Honduras is one of 14 countries that has official diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
