A civil society group is calling for the government to do more to keep Taiwanese nationals safe in China.
The Economic Democracy Union said on Thursday that several Taiwanese nationals living in China have disappeared. It says Taiwan needs a special mechanism to make sure that doesn’t happen again.
Chang Po-shih is a Taiwanese teacher that previously taught in China. He says working conditions there were difficult. Chang worked 12-hour days and faced bullying. He says Chinese policies giving Taiwanese people preferential treatment are nothing more than an attempt to push forward unification. Chang thinks people from Taiwan should think twice before going there.
Lawmaker Chiu Hsien-Chih has given his support to Chang and the union. He says Taiwanese authorities should expand a registration system for nationals visiting Hong Kong and Macau to include China.
