US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says it is important to show support for Taiwan. Pelosi was responding to reports that she has plans to visit Taiwan in August.
Pelosi has neither confirmed nor denied those reports. The speaker says she never reveals her travel plans due to security concerns.
When asked what the United States can do to deter China’s threats against Taiwan, the speaker said it is important to show support for Taiwan. Pelosi also says that Taiwan’s independence is a question for Taiwan to decide.
Media reports suggested that Pelosi had originally planned to visit Taiwan in April but the trip was canceled at the last minute when she was diagnosed with COVID. If Pelosi were to travel to Taiwan, it would be the first visit by a sitting US House speaker for 25 years. But US President Joe Biden has said that the US military is concerned about how China might react, so a trip right now is “not a good idea.”
