Taiwan’s state-owned electricity company says the country’s biggest power plant is coming back to full capacity after a pipe in one of its generation units broke.

Unit 2 is one of 10 coal-fired units at Taichung Power Plant, which is the fourth largest coal-fired power station in the world.

The pipe failure on Saturday came just as Taiwan’s energy usage surged to record highs.

Officials at Taipower say they finished repairing the generation unit in the early hours of Monday morning. It will return to full power once checks are complete.

Taipower says it is doing everything it can to make sure Taiwan has enough power to meet demand. The country broke its consumption record three days in a row last week as a scorching summer heat wave swept the island. And Taipower says that record could soon be broken again.

The company expects power usage to peak at 40.8 million kilowatts and just under 91% of total capacity this week. It is counting on a low pressure front to bring rain and cooler temperatures on Tuesday. But if that doesn’t happen, the company says hot temperatures could push demand even higher.
