Taiwan reported 24,790 new local cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday. There were also 281 imported cases and 37 deaths reported.
An additional 68 people have moderate or severe symptoms of the disease. Tuesday recorded the lowest number of both moderate and severe cases as well as deaths in over two months.
As Taiwan’s case numbers have decreased in recent weeks, some experts are calling for a 0+7 quarantine period for overseas arrivals. That would effectively mean no quarantine on arrival. Currently inbound travelers need to quarantine for three days and then undergo four days of self-health management.
Premier Su Tseng-chang says the government is considering loosening restrictions. However, Deputy Health Minister Victor Wang says 60% of moderate and severe COVID cases among children are in very young children. He says raising the vaccination rate for children is a key factor in determining whether to loosen restrictions.
