The 2022 World Police and Fire Games are underway, and Taiwan has been represented well. Taiwanese competitors have won gold in bench press and silver in the 400 meter hurdle event.

The 2022 World Police and Fire Games are going on now and Team Taiwan has been competing to win. This year’s event is in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Taiwan has already taken home a couple of medals.

Taichung firefighter Liao Kun-ti has won gold in the bench press event. As Liao received his medal, the audience erupted in joy, with one supporter saying “let’s go Taiwan!”

Liao lifted 185kg on his second attempt. Though he attempted a higher weight on his third try, he couldn’t quite hold on. Even so, no other competitor was able to match his performance.

Liao says training to get stronger is very important for firefighters like him because it helps them with their job. He says being strong makes doing things like moving equipment easier.

But Liao isn’t the only Taiwanese winner. Another firefighter from Taichung, Hsu Wei, won silver in the 400 meter hurdle competition.

With events in martial arts, track, and weightlifting, this year’s games are another opportunity for Taiwan’s finest to make their country proud.
