The United States and Taiwan have been communicating about President Joe Biden’s upcoming call with China’s President Xi Jinping. That was the word from Foreign Ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou on Thursday.
Recent media reports have suggested that Biden and Xi plan to discuss Taiwan and the war in Ukraine. Communication between the US and China has been tense, after Beijing warned of “serious consequences” if US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi proceeds with a rumored trip to Taiwan.
Although some media reports suggest that Pelosi has plans to visit Taiwan in August, Ou says Pelosi has not confirmed this trip.
Ou says that Taiwan has always kept a close eye on interactions between China and the US. She also says that Taiwan and the US maintain positive relations with a clear line of communication regarding China.
Ou says that Washington has already conferred with Taiwan about Biden’s plans to speak directly with Xi.
