Overseas cyber attacks reported at train stations and convenience stores

Computer monitors at multiple convenience stores and a train station in Taiwan were reportedly hacked on Wednesday. The monitors displayed images disparaging US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday night for a visit. Her trip drew criticism from China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory. The cyberattacks are seen as a retaliatory attack against Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

The Taiwan Railways Administration said that it shut down the afflicted monitor as soon as staff discovered the provocative images. The affected convenience store chain said that the broadcast signal for its display monitors were taken over by an unknown person.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau is launching an investigation into the matter and says it will track the IP address of the offender.
