COVID-19 (08/08): Taiwan reports 15,206 local cases, 26 deaths
Taiwan's COVID-19 case numbers for August 8, 2022.

Taiwan reported 15,206 new local cases of COVID-19 on Monday. That’s the lowest number for more than three months.

If you take into account the population of each area of Taiwan, Kinmen is a hotspot for the virus. More than 130 people have new cases of COVID there in a population of just under 130,000. The Penghu Islands are also dealing with a high number of infections, as is Hualien County.

Authorities also reported nine more local cases of the highly infectious BA.5 Omicron subvariant, which has caused new waves of infections in many countries.

Another 26 people have died from COVID-19. Most were over the age of 80, and only about a third had taken three doses of a COVID vaccine.

Authorities say another 45 people are suffering from moderate or severe symptoms of the disease.

Taiwan also recorded 206 imported cases of COVID-19 on Monday.
