Paraguay’s new ambassador to Taiwan Carlos José Fleitas Rodríguez met with President Tsai Ing-wen on Thursday to present his credentials.
The new ambassador is a career diplomat and was stationed in Taiwan twice before. He has also obtained an academic degree in the country.
Tsai said at the event that this year marks 65 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. She said Paraguay clearly values its ties with Taiwan. Tsai added that Paraguayan President Mario Abdo Benítez has stood up for Taiwan at multiple international functions in the past.
In her remarks, the president said that Taiwan and Paraguay are like-minded allies, with shared values of freedom and democracy. Tsai said that in the face of the global rise of authoritarianism, democratic partners must strengthen cooperation to safeguard their beliefs, values and ways of life.
