Foreign Minister Joseph Wu on Monday held a video call with the new prime minister of St. Kitts and Nevis Terrance Drew. Wu congratulated Drew on his election victory. The Caribbean country is one of 14 countries that have official diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

Wu thanks the government of St. Kitts and Nevis for its long term support of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. He asks Drew to continue helping make Taiwan’s voice be heard in the international community. Minister Wu also invites Drew to visit Taiwan at a later date to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Drew thanks Taiwan for its consistent infrastructure development support and help in fighting the COVID pandemic. Drew pledges to maintain good relations between the two sides, and push for cooperation in post-pandemic economic recovery, women’s rights, education and public health.

Taiwan established diplomatic relations with St. Kitts and Nevis two weeks after the country gained independence in 1983. That made Taiwan the first country to recognize the dual-island state as an independent nation.
