Over 300 Taiwanese need rescue in Cambodia: government

Taiwan’s government says at least 333 Taiwanese victims of labor trafficking are still trapped in Cambodia. Police have uncovered a number of human trafficking ploys in recent days.

Government spokesperson Lo Ping-cheng told journalists on Thursday that so far, authorities have identified 373 Taiwanese victims of trafficking in Cambodia. Of those, 40 have already returned to Taiwan, but more than 300 are still in need of help.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry says that it will set up a special task force to deal with the problem at its representative office in Vietnam. The Ho Chi Minh City office deals with Taiwan’s affairs in Vietnam and neighboring Cambodia, because Taiwan doesn’t have an office there. The new task force will help victims and maintain contact with Cambodia’s police and court system.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou says the ministry is grateful to the people and non-government organizations offering help and advice. She singled out a popular YouTuber who goes by the name Bump. Bump raised public awareness of the issue and was personally involved in rescuing a number of Taiwanese trafficking victims in Cambodia.
