Last year, people in Taiwan could be expected to live to the age of 80.86. The latest figure is a slight drop compared to the year before, but the interior ministry says over the long term, the country’s life expectancy is still rising.

Statistics released on Friday show that women lived to an average age of 84.25, while men lived to 77.67.

People in Taipei lived the longest with an average age of 84.17, while Taitung County had the lowest life expectancy of 76.64.

In general, people in the north and west of Taiwan lived longer than people in the south and east. Residents of Taitung and Hualien on Taiwan’s Pacific-facing east coast, for example, had a life expectancy around three to four years shorter than people in the west. But the gap between them has shrunk slightly over the last 10 years by about half a year.
