Japan-Taiwan friendship parliament chair leads delegation to Taiwan
A Japanese parliamentary delegation led by Keiji Furuya arrives at Taipei Songshan International Airport

A Japanese parliamentary delegation arrived in Taiwan on Monday. The group is led by head of Japan’s Taiwan friendship parliamentary group Keiji Furuya.

The delegation is scheduled to meet with President Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President William Lai along with other top government figures. The parliamentarians are also scheduled to visit the grave of former President Lee Teng-hui, who had close ties with Japan.

Delegation leader Keiji Furuya wrote in a tweet on Monday morning that China’s “military provocations” and “erratic behavior” threaten the peace and security of not just Taiwan, but East Asia as a whole. He says countries with shared values must stick together.
According to Japanese newspaper Sankei Shinbum, Furuya’s visit is a show of support for Taiwan. The paper says his meeting with Tsai Ing-wen will focus on clarifying Japanese and US lawmakers’ stance on Taiwan strategy. In addition, Furuya will make travel arrangements for Japanese officials attending Taiwan’s national day celebrations in mid-October.
