Taiwanese authorities have organized a workshop to discuss transnational human trafficking. This comes as Taiwan investigates human traffickers promising high wages for those willing to go abroad for work. That came from deputy interior minister Chen Tsung-yen speaking at the workshop on Tuesday.

Recent weeks have seen Taiwanese authorities begin repatriating possibly hundreds of citizens stuck in Cambodia after having been scammed. These individuals went to the country after being promised high wages, only to later have their passports seized and effectively trapped.

Tuesday’s workshop included multiple ministries, ambassadors stationed in Taiwan, and NGOs to discuss issues relating to human trafficking. It included discussions on the influence of the pandemic on and the role of digital technology in the recent increase in transnational human trafficking.

Chen calls on digital networks and social media platforms to assist authorities in preventing transnational human trafficking. The interior ministry says experts from around the world should come together to share information on human trafficking and develop responses.
